A Visit to the Kangaroo Club

A Visit to the Kangaroo Club

Many thanks to the Kangaroo Club, the Oxford-based internal pouch support group, who invited National IA to take the IA stand to their Information Day on 16th September. Maggie and Kate enjoyed meeting so many members of the pouch community, including some IA members. The day was packed with advice and support for pouchies.

Mr Bruce George, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon from OUH NHS Foundation Trust, gave a detailed presentation highlighting the potential surgical interventions which may be required through the life of a pouch. Specialist Pouch nurses Simon Turley and Fran Woodhouse of OUH and Angie Perrin, Clinical Education Lead from Salts Healthcare, offered many practical troubleshooting tips for pouch problems.

We learned a great deal from Qualified Nutritionist Therapist Clemmie Oliver, who is herself a pouchie. She gave a fascinating talk and lots of sound advice on diet for good and continuing pouch function. The impact of pouch surgery on families was also explored through presentations by a daughter, a wife and a husband of three pouch patients.

It was a fabulous day and we’re already looking forward to next year’s event. Thanks again to the Kangaroo Club Committee for their hard work in organising the day and for inviting IA pouchies to share it.
